Wrapper

A wrapper is an application or service that uses an existing AI model, such as ChatGPT or Claude, and enhances it with a customized interface, functions, or specific contexts to create a new product without building AI from scratch.
A wrapper acts as an intermediate layer between an AI model and the end user. It connects through an API and adds elements such as optimized prompts, customized user interfaces, or automation flows adapted to specific tasks. A useful metaphor is to think of a car engine: the AI model is the engine, while the wrapper is the bodywork and controls that define how the engine is used in different vehicles.

Common examples include marketing assistants that generate advertising texts from a base model, educational apps that present AI as a math tutor, or productivity tools that integrate a model into a panel with task organization functions.

This strategy allows entrepreneurs and developers to build practical solutions without training their own models, reducing costs and development time. However, wrappers depend entirely on the underlying model and may provide limited differentiation if several applications rely on the same engine. Still, they have played a key role in the spread of generative AI, making it easier to adapt to various sectors and bringing it closer to audiences without advanced technical knowledge.
