Windsurf Editor is an integrated development environment (IDE) that combines AI copilot and agent capabilities in a system called "flows". This approach allows the developer and AI to operate on the same state simultaneously, maintaining complete synchronization during the development process.

The main functionality centers on Cascade, a system that integrates deep codebase understanding, advanced tools, and real-time recognition of user actions. Cascade includes multi-file and multi-edit capabilities, contextual recognition, terminal command suggestions, and LLM-based search tools.

The editor incorporates Windsurf Previews, which allows visualizing websites directly in the IDE, selecting specific elements, and modifying them through Cascade. It includes direct deployment functionality from the development environment.

Among the technical features is integration with linters that automatically corrects generated code errors, support for Model Context Protocol (MCP) to connect custom tools, and Tab to Jump that predicts cursor location for optimized navigation.

Supercomplete analyzes potential future actions beyond code snippet insertion. The system includes inline commands via Cmd + I to generate or refactor code using natural language, both in editor and terminal.

Codelenses allow understanding or refactoring code with one click, while highlighted code actions facilitate mentioning specific fragments in the Cascade panel. The @ mentions system allows referencing functions, classes, files, or complete directories.

Windsurf Editor is built on a Visual Studio Code fork and uses proprietary Riptide technology for code search that processes millions of lines in seconds. The system maintains the same security guarantees and telemetry rules as existing Windsurf extensions.
