SpaceX acquires xAI and announces orbital data centers to scale AI

The acquisition of xAI by SpaceX seeks to create an integrated system that combines artificial intelligence, rocket technology, satellite internet (Starlink) and real-time information platforms (X). One of the main challenges this project addresses is the massive energy consumption required by terrestrial data centers for AI. According to the announcement made by Elon Musk, global electricity demand for AI cannot be met with terrestrial solutions without imposing hardships on communities and the environment.

The proposal consists of transporting data centers to space, where they can harness solar energy directly and constantly, without the operational and maintenance costs of terrestrial facilities. Musk estimates that in two to three years, the most economical way to generate AI computing capacity will be in space.

The plan contemplates launching satellites that function as orbital data centers. According to the calculations presented, launching one million tons per year of satellites that generate 100 kilowatts of computing power per ton would add 100 gigawatts of AI computing capacity annually. This additional capacity would allow companies to train AI models and process data at unprecedented scales and speeds.

The Starship rocket will be the key piece for transporting these satellites, with frequent launches that could deliver millions of tons to orbit each year. The project also includes longer-term plans to establish manufacturing infrastructure on the Moon, which would allow satellites to be manufactured and deployed directly from there, further scaling available computing capacity.

The company has indicated that this constellation will follow the same space sustainability strategies they have applied to their existing satellite systems, including end-of-life disposal plans.
