OpenClaw is an open-source tool licensed under MIT that acts as a personal AI assistant accessible from the user's messaging applications. It is installed and runs on the user's own device —Mac, Windows or Linux— and acts as a bridge between chat applications and AI models, without relying on external servers.
Once configured, a single central process manages all connections and conversations simultaneously, with support for WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, iMessage, Signal and Slack, in both private chats and groups. Compatibility with additional messaging applications can be extended through add-ons.
OpenClaw works with the main language model providers, including Anthropic and OpenAI, as well as locally installed models. Getting started requires Node.js 22 or higher and an API key from the chosen provider.
Core features include persistent conversation memory, multi-agent management with separate sessions, and the ability to access the file system and execute commands on the device, with the option to restrict that access. It can also browse the web, extract information from pages and fill out forms.
It supports connection with iOS and Android mobile devices, with voice interaction capability and camera access. Sending and receiving images, audio and documents is available across all configured channels. The system includes a browser-based control panel for managing conversations, configuration and sessions. Functionality can be extended with skills created by the community or developed by the user.
