ChatGPT Atlas: OpenAI launches its own web browser with integrated AI

OpenAI has announced the launch of ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser designed with ChatGPT as a core component. The browser enables the assistant to interact with web page content without requiring switching between applications or manually copying information.

Atlas incorporates ChatGPT directly into the browsing interface through a sidebar accessible from any page. The assistant can read content visible on screen, answer questions about that content, and perform tasks related to the active page. The functionality also includes suggestions while typing in open text fields.

The browser introduces a browser memories system that allows ChatGPT to remember information from visited pages for use in subsequent conversations. This feature is optional, and users can review, archive, or delete these memories at any time from settings. When browsing history is deleted, associated memories are also removed.

Atlas includes an agent mode that enables ChatGPT to perform browsing actions autonomously. This mode, available in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business users, can open tabs, navigate between pages, and complete tasks while the user continues browsing. OpenAI has implemented security restrictions: the agent cannot execute code in the browser, download files, or install extensions, and requests confirmation before acting on sensitive sites such as financial institutions.

The browser offers controls over what information ChatGPT can see and remember. Users can disable the assistant's visibility for specific sites using a control in the address bar, open incognito windows to browse without ChatGPT accessing content, or completely disable browser memories. By default, OpenAI does not use browsing content to train its models, although users can opt to allow this in data control settings.

ChatGPT Atlas is available starting today for macOS, with access for Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users. The Business version is in beta phase, and Enterprise and Edu plan users can access it if enabled by their administrator. OpenAI has announced that versions for Windows, iOS, and Android will be available soon. Existing parental controls in ChatGPT also apply in Atlas, and additional options have been added for parents to disable browser memories and agent mode.
