It’s About Time: The Copilot Usage Report 2025

This report presents an unprecedented analysis of 37.5 million de-identified conversations with Microsoft Copilot, collected between January and September 2025. Beyond answering what people do with artificial intelligence, this research reveals how and when they do it, showing that Copilot has integrated deeply into the fabric of millions of users' daily lives.

The study uncovers surprisingly differentiated usage patterns depending on context. On mobile devices, health and personal wellness dominate conversations invariably: regardless of the time of day or month of the year, users constantly turn to Copilot for health queries, wellness advice, and support in their daily routines. This consistency reveals that, in the intimacy and immediacy of mobile, people trust AI as a pocket confidant that never sleeps.

The contrast with desktop computer usage is revealing. During traditional working hours (8 AM - 5 PM), work and career topics surpass technology as the dominant theme. Programming queries increase on weekdays, while conversations about video games spike on weekends, creating an almost perfect pattern reflecting the division between work and leisure. In August, this phenomenon became especially visible: the user community alternated between programming during the week and gaming on weekends with equal intensity.

Temporal rhythms reveal fascinating moments of human connection. Philosophical and existential questions emerge during nighttime hours, when users contemplate life's big questions at 2 AM. In February, a notable spike is observed: conversations about personal relationships and personal growth increase significantly in the days leading up to and during Valentine's Day, showing how people turn to Copilot to navigate important moments in their lives.

A key finding of the report is the change in the nature of interactions. Although searching for information remains the most popular function, there has been a clear increase in people seeking personal advice, not just quick answers. This evolution toward seeking reflective guidance on relationships, life decisions, and personal wellness indicates that AI is becoming a trusted companion for life's everyday questions.

This document is aimed at artificial intelligence researchers, technology product designers, digital sector professionals, academics interested in technology adoption, and policy makers seeking to understand the social impact of generative AI. The analysis uses automated classifiers that completely preserve privacy, extracting only high-level summaries about topics and intentions without accessing specific conversation content.

The findings suggest profound implications for future AI system design: the need for context-aware interfaces that adapt not only visually, but in personality and capabilities according to device, time of day, and user needs. Copilot has ceased to be a tool to become a vital companion that adapts to every moment of life.
