What is Kilo Code?

Kilo Code is an open source tool for code generation and modification using artificial intelligence language models. It is available as an extension for IDEs (VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Cursor, Windsurf, Trae AI) and command-line interface (CLI). The source code is licensed under Apache-2.0 and is accessible for inspection and modification.

The tool operates through five specialized agent modes. Orchestrator mode breaks down projects into subtasks and coordinates between other agent modes. Architect mode analyzes codebases to create design systems and implementation plans. Code mode transforms requests into code implementations. Ask mode provides technical responses without modifying existing code. Debug mode specializes in systematic problem diagnosis. Users can create additional custom modes for specific tasks.

The extension includes an automatic failure recovery system that detects errors, runs test suites, and corrects failed implementations without manual intervention. It integrates automatic context search in the codebase and maintains a memory log of previous work and user preferences to avoid re-explanations.

Kilo Code implements the Model Context Protocol (MCP) that allows adding custom tools, integrating external APIs, and connecting databases. The tool can read and write files, execute terminal commands, control web browsers, and perform code searches.

The system supports over 500 language models through Kilo Gateway and alternative providers. Kilo Gateway offers direct access to Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google models at list price with no additional commissions, operating under a pay-as-you-go model without subscriptions. The tool also allows using own API keys, running local models through Ollama or LM Studio, and connecting with managed services like AWS Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, and Google AI Studio.
