Microsoft has announced Copilot Cowork, a new Microsoft 365 Copilot feature that goes beyond chat to execute complete tasks autonomously, coordinating emails, calendars, files and meetings under user supervision.

Microsoft has introduced Copilot Cowork, a new feature integrated into Microsoft 365 Copilot that extends the AI assistant's capabilities beyond conversational responses. While Copilot has primarily helped with drafting text or finding information, Cowork is designed to execute complete tasks within the Microsoft 365 work environment.

Cowork operates on a supervised planning and execution system. The user describes the task they want to accomplish and the assistant builds an action plan that runs in the background. Throughout the process, the system requests confirmation before applying changes, alerts the user if clarification is needed, and allows pausing or modifying execution at any time. This capability is powered by Work IQ, a technology that connects the assistant with data from Outlook, Teams, Excel and other Microsoft 365 applications to act with real context about each user's work.

Microsoft has described four specific use cases. For calendar management, Cowork can review the Outlook schedule, identify low-value meetings and propose changes, adding focus blocks once user approval is obtained. For meeting preparation, it can compile relevant documents, generate presentations and schedule preparation time on the calendar. For corporate research, it can gather financial reports, regulatory documents and news, organising results into an executive summary and an Excel spreadsheet with structured data. For product launch planning, Cowork can build competitor comparisons, generate value proposition documents and produce an action plan with milestones and assigned owners.

From a technical standpoint, Microsoft has indicated that the feature incorporates technology developed in collaboration with Anthropic, the company behind the Claude language model. Cowork operates within Microsoft 365's security and compliance boundaries, with identity and permissions management applied by default, and a cloud execution environment that allows tasks to continue across devices.

Copilot Cowork is currently in a testing phase with a limited group of customers. Broader availability is planned within Microsoft's Frontier programme for late March 2026.
