The company introduces Claude for Healthcare and expands Claude for Life Sciences features with connections to medical databases, clinical trial registries and specialized scientific platforms.
Anthropic has announced the expansion of its specialized tools for the healthcare and scientific research sectors. The company introduces Claude for Healthcare, a set of resources that allows medical providers, insurers and end users to use AI for medical purposes while complying with HIPAA regulations, and expands the capabilities of Claude for Life Sciences with new connections to scientific platforms.
The update includes connectors to various industry databases and systems. In healthcare, Claude can now access the Medicare and Medicaid coverage database, the ICD-10 disease classification system, and the national medical provider registry. These connectors enable coverage requirement verification, medical billing code validation, and administrative process management.
For life sciences, the platform incorporates connections to Medidata for clinical trial management, the ClinicalTrials.gov registry, and specialized databases such as ChEMBL for bioactive compounds and Open Targets for therapeutic target identification. Access to preprint servers like bioRxiv and medRxiv has also been added.
Practical applications include reviewing prior authorization requests, a process that can take hours and that Claude can now expedite by consulting coverage requirements and verifying clinical criteria against patient records. The tool can also assist with care coordination, patient message triage, and clinical trial management support.
Anthropic has incorporated two new agent skills: FHIR development, the standard for data exchange between healthcare systems, and a template for prior authorization review that organizations can customize according to their policies.
For individual users in the United States, Claude Pro and Max subscribers can connect their personal health data through integrations with HealthEx, Function, Apple Health, and Android Health Connect. This functionality allows users to summarize their medical history, understand test results, and prepare medical consultations, while maintaining strict privacy controls and not using this data to train models.
The Opus 4.5 model, used in these applications, shows improvements in medical and scientific evaluations according to the company's internal data. Organizations using these tools include Banner Health, Novo Nordisk, Sanofi, Genmab, and Flatiron Health, among others from the pharmaceutical and healthcare sector.
The new connectors and agent skills are available to all Claude subscribers, including Pro, Max, Teams, and Enterprise versions.
